India is moving toward an integrated border-security architecture in which several technologies work as a single surveillance and response network. AI, machine learning, radar, electronic warfare, advanced imaging sensors and directed-energy weapons are being combined to improve the ability to detect and counter unauthorized movement and hostile drones.The concept moves away from isolated surveillance equipment. Instead, information generated by different sensors is brought together so that threats can be detected earlier, tracked more accurately and engaged with less delay. Fibre-optic intrusion-detection equipment can operate alongside high-resolution cameras, thermal/infrared systems, hyperspectral and multispectral sensors, radar surveillance and protected communications networks.DRDO is pursuing several technologies to support this architecture, including AI-assisted airborne-target detection, fibre-optic sensing, radar-based tracking and multispectral electro-optical and infrared surveillance. Small UAVs can be particularly challenging targets for conventional sensors, making the combination of different detection methods important. Radar data, RF signatures and electro-optical information can be fused and transmitted to centralized command-and-control facilities for coordinated decision-making.India has already demonstrated an indigenous counter-UAS solution incorporating three major functions: detection, electronic disruption through RF jamming and laser-based physical destruction. BEL received technology transfer for the system, while other domestic firms were also offered opportunities to take up the technology. DRDO and BEL subsequently developed a Naval Anti-Drone System that integrates radar with EO/IR and RF-based detection, along with jamming and a laser hard-kill capability.The wider objective is to create a persistent and connected security layer capable of functioning in terrain where conventional patrolling is insufficient. DRDO’s laser-fence technology is intended to provide continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations while linking several sensor types into a common system. Such systems can support protection of military assets, border infrastructure and sensitive Line of Control sectors.
