The UK has awarded Saab UK a £1.8 million logistics agreement covering continued support for the Giraffe 1X tactical radar. The deal is intended to ensure that the systems remain properly equipped, supported, and ready for operational use.Saab’s responsibilities will include supplying spares and equipment as well as delivering training and technical helpdesk assistance. The initial contract period runs from July 2, 2026, to March 31, 2027. Britain can potentially extend the arrangement until March 2030.The decision to contract Saab directly is linked to the company’s position as the original equipment manufacturer and design authority for Giraffe 1X. Saab also possesses the proprietary information necessary to carry out specialized technical support.The British Army began acquiring the radar in 2023, when 11 units were ordered. A further purchase announced in 2026 indicates that the UK continues to see value in compact and rapidly deployable air-surveillance systems.Giraffe 1X uses an AESA radar architecture to create a three-dimensional picture of nearby air and surface activity. The complete system weighs less than 150 kilograms, allowing it to be deployed by small teams using lightweight transport and support equipment.Its surveillance role includes detecting low-level aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The radar can also support defenses against drones and provide early warning of rocket, artillery, and mortar threats.For the UK, the system provides a mobile sensor that can accompany forward forces and protect important installations. Saab’s growing manufacturing and support infrastructure in Fareham is also expected to contribute to the company’s long-term UK defense activities.
