Akashteer has emerged as a key element of India’s effort to modernize ground-based air-defense command and control. Developed by Bharat Electronics with support from DRDO and ISRO, the system connects sensors and defensive assets into an integrated digital network.Rather than relying on individual systems operating separately, Akashteer is designed to collect information from multiple sources and present it through a common operational picture. This enables air-defense personnel to obtain a broader understanding of activity within their area of responsibility.The architecture can support automated threat identification, tracking, and weapon assignment. By processing information electronically, it aims to reduce the time between the initial detection of an aerial object and the decision to engage it.Interoperability is another important feature. India’s armed forces operate equipment originating from different development and manufacturing ecosystems. A network capable of bringing these systems together can improve the effectiveness of the overall air-defense structure without requiring every component to be replaced.Akashteer also supports coordination between command centers and individual weapon batteries. A shared airspace picture can help units understand which targets are being handled elsewhere and which aircraft or objects are friendly, reducing the possibility of fratricide.The system illustrates India’s wider transition toward network-centric defense. As aerial threats increasingly include drones, cruise missiles, aircraft, and other low-observable systems, digitally connected sensors and weapons will become increasingly important for maintaining rapid and coordinated air-defense responses.
