Metallus is set to become a major supplier of specialty steel to the US military under a Defense Logistics Agency agreement worth as much as $995 million. The long-term contract covers requirements across all five US military services—the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force—and runs through September 2031.The DLA has already placed an approximately $125-million initial delivery order, with individual orders to be fulfilled within 24 months. Among the materials covered is High Fragmentation 1 Steel, a key material used for manufacturing large-caliber artillery and mortar projectiles such as 155mm shells. The award comes as the Pentagon seeks to replenish depleted ammunition inventories and strengthen the domestic defense-industrial base. Metallus had previously invested in expanded production at its Canton, Ohio, facility, adding reheating, rolling and automated sawing capabilities for 155mm shell metal parts. That expansion received $99.75 million in US Army funding.
