The US Army has placed an order with Photonis Defense for 1,600 Binocular Night Observation Device systems, marking a major transition in its effort to introduce a practical and cost-conscious binocular night-vision solution for soldiers.BiNOD is designed as a helmet-mounted system that uses image intensification technology to amplify available ambient light. This allows troops to maintain improved visibility when operating under limited-light conditions.Deliveries are expected to begin before the close of 2026, while most of the ordered systems are scheduled to reach the Army during 2027.The procurement comes from a contract awarded in March 2026 that has a maximum ceiling of $352.6 million. The Army and company have not disclosed the value of the current production order.With the latest award, the program is entering Low-Rate Initial Production. The phase provides an opportunity to verify manufacturing quality, production procedures, and operational performance before a possible expansion into full-rate production.Photonis Defense will complete final assembly and testing in the United States, while Exosens will supply the image-intensifier tubes used within each system.The contract also highlights Exosens’ growing position in defense imaging. The company is expanding thermal-camera manufacturing capacity as demand increases for compact sensors used in unmanned aircraft and counter-UAS applications.Elsewhere, BROLIS has selected Exosens to provide 17,000 image-intensifier tubes for Czech military night-vision equipment. Exosens is also contributing to the European Defence Fund’s SPIRIT program, which is working to improve infrared detector performance and establish a stronger European industrial base for advanced imaging technologies.The latest BiNOD order consequently strengthens Photonis Defense’s production pipeline while supporting Exosens’ expanding presence across international defense imaging programs.
