The US Senate Armed Services Committee has advanced legislation aimed at establishing stronger oversight standards for artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons systems used by the Department of Defense. The proposed measures are included in the draft fiscal year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation would require extensive testing, accountability measures, and meaningful human supervision of AI-enabled military systems. It also prohibits artificial intelligence from independently authorizing nuclear weapons launches or making final decisions involving strategic use of force. The proposal reflects growing efforts by policymakers to ensure responsible development and deployment of military AI technologies while maintaining human control over critical decisions.
