LightPath Technologies has secured a new $11 million production order to deliver infrared camera solutions for advanced counter-drone platforms. The contract, awarded by an undisclosed international technology partner, extends an ongoing collaboration focused on developing specialized imaging systems for defense and security applications.The infrared sensors supplied under the agreement will support unmanned aerial system detection and tracking missions by providing thermal imaging capability in operational environments where conventional surveillance methods may face limitations. These systems are expected to enhance situational awareness for military users, government agencies, and public safety organizations.A key element of the program is LightPath’s planned transition from germanium-based infrared optics to its proprietary BlackDiamond material. While germanium has traditionally been used in thermal imaging systems due to its ability to transmit infrared wavelengths, concerns over supply availability have increased following export controls affecting global germanium distribution.BlackDiamond has been developed as an alternative infrared optical material intended to provide comparable imaging performance while improving supply chain reliability. LightPath will introduce the new material gradually as the program progresses.The company continues to expand its defense portfolio through multiple contracts, including a $9.6 million agreement for cooled infrared camera systems used in defense and security missions. In addition, its G5 Infrared subsidiary received a $2.2 million order from L3Harris Technologies to provide infrared cameras supporting the US Navy’s shipboard electro-optical and infrared surveillance capabilities.
