Rheinmetall has secured a contract exceeding €130 million from the German Armed Forces to deliver advanced communication headsets that combine hearing protection with secure battlefield communications. The procurement supports efforts to modernize soldier systems by improving situational awareness and communication while safeguarding personnel from damaging noise levels.

The contract calls for the delivery of 50,000 SmG (Sprechsatz mit Gehörschutzfunktion) headset systems. These headsets integrate active noise-reduction technology with microphones linked to multiple radios, enabling seamless communication in combat environments. The systems reduce exposure to impulse noise, enhance quiet sounds, and feature push-to-talk switches, optional onboard communication interfaces, and compatibility with new and legacy combat helmets.

Rheinmetall is partnering with 3M Peltor and CEOTRONICS AG to supply ComTac VIII headsets and related components for the program. The order builds on Rheinmetall’s recent deliveries of communication headsets to the Bundeswehr, including additional ComTac VIII systems provided in 2024 to support mechanized formations.

The contract represents the third tranche under a seven-year framework agreement signed in April 2024. The framework allows Germany to procure up to 191,000 SmG headset sets, with a total potential value of roughly €400 million. Earlier delivery lots totaling around €150 million are expected to be completed by the end of 2025, underscoring the long-term nature of the Bundeswehr’s soldier communications modernization program.
