The US government has authorized a $2.68-billion weapons sale to Canada, offering a significant boost to Ottawa’s expanding defense modernization program. The approval follows Canada’s renewed focus on upgrading its armed forces as it navigates shifting strategic dynamics and concerns about future relations with the United States.

Under the approved package, Canada will receive up to 3,414 BLU-111 general-purpose bombs, 500-pound munitions designed for air-to-ground engagements, particularly against personnel and light targets. The deal also includes 3,108 GBU-39 small-diameter bombs, known for their range and precision against stationary objects.

The purchase further incorporates more than 5,000 JDAM conversion kits, enabling legacy unguided bombs to be transformed into precision-guided strike weapons. These upgrades will significantly enhance Canada’s ability to conduct accurate and effective air operations alongside allied forces.

In its formal notification to Congress, the State Department said the sale will advance North American defense cooperation, bolster Canada’s capacity to deter regional threats, and maintain seamless interoperability with US military systems. The agreement reflects Washington’s continued commitment to supporting Canada’s security and defense objectives.
