During the MSPO 2025 defense show in Kielce, Poland finalized an agreement with the United States to acquire GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB I) for its combat aircraft. The deal, valued at $120 million, is set to conclude deliveries by 2028, representing a significant modernization step for Poland’s air combat capabilities.

The GBU-39/B belongs to the 250-pound class of precision-guided bombs designed to fit inside stealth aircraft bays such as those of the F-35A. With a range of more than 60 nautical miles, the weapon allows extended stand-off targeting, preserving aircraft survivability while reducing collateral effects in high-value strikes.

Unlike larger conventional bombs, the SDB’s size enables aircraft to carry multiple munitions at once—up to four per bay in place of a single 2,000-pound bomb. This dramatically expands target engagement opportunities for aircrews. Importantly, the bomb is not limited to the F-35; it can also be fielded on F-16 Fighting Falcons, ensuring seamless integration with Poland’s current fleet.

With the F-16 still forming the backbone of the Polish Air Force, the SDB acquisition delivers an immediate operational boost while preparing the ground for the future arrival of the F-35. The combination of precision, flexibility, and dual compatibility strengthens Warsaw’s ability to support NATO missions and enhance national defense.
