The German Army will soon adopt SitaWare Edge, a cutting-edge situational awareness tool from Danish defense software provider Systematic. The system is tailored to enhance operations for dismounted troops who often face fast-changing scenarios and unreliable communications in the field.
Through smartphones and tablets, SitaWare Edge delivers a range of features including mapping, force tracking, secure chat, and mission planning. Its design prioritizes simplicity, ensuring minimal training is required, while its ability to integrate third-party apps makes it adaptable for different missions. By providing commanders with real-time visibility of unit positions and shared intelligence, it closes the gap between ground forces and higher headquarters.
Even in areas with poor connectivity, the software remains functional by relying on tactical radios, satellites, or other low-bandwidth channels to transmit secure data. As part of the contract, Germany also secured a development package, allowing customization of the platform for unique operational demands.
The rollout of SitaWare Edge is part of the Bundeswehr’s Mission Enabling Service initiative, which seeks to unify digital command networks across land, air, and sea domains. The effort mirrors NATO’s emphasis on networked warfare and joint interoperability, a priority reinforced by the alliance’s 2022 Digital Transformation Vision. With Systematic already supporting German modernization programs, the new contract builds on a 2023 seven-year support agreement that ensures continued upgrades and integration of the SitaWare ecosystem.
