The U.S. is sending approximately 3,000 Marines to Norway this month to join Cold Response 26, NATO’s Arctic exercise designed to test alliance operations in extreme environments. The contingent will integrate with over 25,000 troops from European and North American NATO members, alongside Navy, Air Force, and special operations units. Assets include F-35A fighters, refueling tankers, and search-and-rescue helicopters. The deployment demonstrates U.S. commitment to NATO interoperability and Arctic readiness. The exercises coincide with political tensions over Greenland, following Trump’s public comments about negotiating for the territory. European allies have responded with reassurance and additional military planning, including France’s proposal for a NATO drill in Greenland, emphasizing the strategic importance of Arctic defense and joint readiness.
