Nokia and Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) have entered a strategic agreement to jointly develop a 5G tactical communications system tailored for defense operations in the Baltic states. The project aims to enhance the region’s digital battlefield capabilities by delivering a secure and resilient 5G network optimized for multi-domain military missions.
The new system will leverage Nokia’s radio communication technologies and LMT’s operational defense experience to create a scalable, interoperable architecture. It will allow real-time data exchange among sensors, unmanned systems, and command units — ensuring faster decision-making and improved battlefield awareness. The solution also integrates autonomous technologies and AI-driven analytics for advanced mission support.
The partnership follows years of Nokia–LMT collaboration in developing Latvia’s 5G military infrastructure. Both companies previously tested their technologies at Ādaži military base near Riga, using a portable 5G tactical setup powered by Nokia’s Banshee radio platform. The system demonstrated strong field performance, paving the way for large-scale deployment across the Baltic defense network.
Globally, Nokia continues to strengthen its defense communications footprint. Recent partnerships include work with Motorola Solutions on a rapid-deploy 5G network for the UK Armed Forces, a collaboration with Rheinmetall in Germany on a next-gen battlefield network, and joint efforts with Lockheed Martin and Verizon in the US to integrate 5G.MIL Hybrid Base Stations for secure, multi-domain military communications. These initiatives mark Nokia’s growing influence in modern defense connectivity solutions across NATO and allied forces.
