The German government has opted for Raytheon’s SPY-6(V)1 radar to equip its upcoming F127-class air defense frigates, reinforcing the country’s commitment to advanced naval modernization. The acquisition request, submitted through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program, also includes services for radar integration, system adaptation, and ongoing technical support.

If the deal is finalized, Germany will become the first non-U.S. operator of the SPY-6 family—one of the most capable multi-mission radar systems in the world. The SPY-6(V)1 variant features four fixed arrays, each containing 37 radar modular assemblies (RMAs), providing comprehensive 360-degree coverage for air, surface, and missile defense missions.

Powered by Gallium Nitride-based transmit and receive modules, the radar offers high efficiency, superior target discrimination, and robust protection against electronic warfare. Already fielded aboard several U.S. Navy destroyers and amphibious ships, the SPY-6 represents a major leap forward in maritime sensor performance and interoperability.

Germany reportedly selected Raytheon’s radar over Lockheed Martin’s SPY-7 proposal after careful evaluation of capability and integration compatibility. Despite this, Lockheed Martin will still play a key role by supplying the Aegis combat and weapon control system for the new frigates, ensuring a balanced and interoperable naval defense network.
