Warsaw will soon host joint counter-drone exercises with Ukrainian specialists, a step that highlights the deepening security cooperation between the two neighbors. The decision follows repeated Russian drone incursions into Polish territory, which have alarmed the NATO ally and underscored the urgency of strengthening aerial defenses.
The Polish Ministry of Defense revealed that discussions between technical experts from both sides are focused on long-term collaboration in drone and counter-drone systems. Officials stressed that the training will take place exclusively in Poland, after earlier remarks from President Volodymyr Zelensky created speculation that Polish troops could be sent into Ukraine. The clarification comes after Poland confirmed shooting down at least three “hostile objects” on September 10, amid a rising number of drone-related incidents linked to Russia.
A staunch backer of Kyiv since 2022, Poland has consistently warned that Moscow’s aggressive drone campaign risks pulling Europe into an open clash. The United Nations Security Council has also weighed in on the situation, noting that the incursions threaten to drag NATO states into direct confrontation with Russia, a scenario with far-reaching global implications.
At the same time, Poland is investing heavily in its own unmanned capabilities. The government has earmarked 200 million zloty ($55 million) for a new Drone Center, which will be established under the Air Force Institute of Technology. This facility will serve as the hub for testing, development, and operational deployment of drones, ensuring that Poland not only hosts joint training but also strengthens its long-term defense architecture against aerial threats.
