Sweden’s Saab has signed a 550 million Swedish kronor ($58.5 million) contract to supply its Giraffe 4A radar system and associated services to a Latin American customer. This agreement represents the company’s first regional sale of the land-based Giraffe 4A configuration, extending its footprint into a new market.
The Giraffe 4A provides advanced surveillance and air defense capabilities. With its 400-kilometer detection range, the radar can simultaneously track a variety of threats, including manned aircraft, UAVs, incoming missiles, and artillery fire. Launched in 2014, it has become a versatile solution for modern militaries seeking rapid and reliable situational awareness.
Designed for flexibility, the system delivers continuous 360-degree monitoring and refreshes data every second. In high-threat situations, operators can direct the radar toward a specific axis, where it updates as frequently as eight times per second.
Mobility is another advantage: the system can be transported aboard tactical and strategic airlifters such as the C-130, A400M, or C-17, and two personnel can deploy it in less than 10 minutes, enhancing operational readiness in fast-moving environments.
