The latest Balikatan (“shoulder to shoulder”) drills mark a new chapter in US–Philippine military cooperation, with the two countries engaging in expansive combined arms and missile defense exercises. The training began with a show of unity, featuring remarks emphasizing enduring alliance and mutual defense, and will continue with a series of “full-scale battle” simulations testing both integrated command and new technology.

Over 17,000 troops are focused on defending key maritime approaches and air corridors, reflecting both recent tensions and the need for robust, adaptable defenses against a range of conventional and hybrid challenges. The 2025 edition of Balikatan underscores both nations’ resolve, readiness for rapid crisis response, and shared interest in upholding international law and freedom of navigation amid a complex strategic environment in the South China Sea.
