General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Kongsberg Gruppen have reached another important milestone in their effort to integrate the Joint Strike Missile onto the MQ-9B family of unmanned aircraft. Successful completion of both the System Requirements Review and Preliminary Design Review confirms that the collaborative project is progressing into detailed engineering and integration activities following validation of key technical requirements. The work focuses on equipping the SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian variants with Kongsberg’s advanced fifth-generation Joint Strike Missile, transforming the MQ-9B into a platform capable of performing both persistent intelligence missions and long-range precision strike operations. Jointly funded by the two companies, the integration project will provide operators with significantly greater operational flexibility by combining surveillance, target tracking, and stand-off attack capabilities within a single unmanned aircraft. The Joint Strike Missile is specifically designed to engage heavily defended land and maritime targets while employing advanced guidance, precision navigation, and low-observable features to improve survivability. Once fielded, the enhanced MQ-9B is expected to provide armed forces with a highly versatile unmanned platform capable of supporting modern multi-domain operations across both conventional and maritime theaters.
