Turkish defense company Aselsan has secured a three-year NATO contract to provide advanced IFF interrogator systems for MANPADS, reinforcing the alliance’s efforts to improve airspace safety and air defense coordination. The move is designed to enhance NATO forces’ ability to correctly identify friendly aircraft while countering hostile aerial threats.
The contract, administered by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, calls for the supply of Mode 5 IFF-enabled systems compatible with shoulder-launched air defense weapons. These systems are considered essential for modern air defense operations, as they reduce the likelihood of misidentification in environments where allied aircraft, drones, and enemy platforms may operate simultaneously.
Valid for three years, the framework agreement provides NATO members with reliable access to IFF hardware and support services, enabling wider adoption across national MANPADS inventories. The capability allows air defense operators to engage threats with greater situational awareness, supporting NATO’s evolving integrated air and missile defense architecture.
The Aselsan deal complements a series of recent NATO air defense procurements. Several alliance members, including Germany, Romania, Spain, and the Netherlands, have acquired Patriot systems through NSPA, while Raytheon has been contracted to deliver additional Patriot GEM-T missiles to Germany. At the same time, Poland’s WISŁA system has reached full operational status, and Italy’s SAMP/T deployments in Lithuania continue to bolster NATO’s air defense coverage along its eastern flank.
