The US Navy has awarded BAE Systems a new five-year contract to continue producing the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) guidance kits, a major capability used by American and allied militaries. The agreement begins with an initial $322 million procurement and could rise to $1.7 billion if all options are exercised. The contract covers the delivery of “tens of thousands” of precision-guided rocket kits, underscoring strong demand for the system worldwide.
APKWS has been a cornerstone of BAE Systems’ precision munitions portfolio for more than a decade, with over 12 years of full-rate production. The kits are manufactured at company facilities in Hudson, New Hampshire, and Austin, Texas. By converting 2.75-inch (70mm) unguided rockets into laser-guided weapons, APKWS offers an affordable way to conduct accurate strikes on stationary or moving targets with minimal collateral damage and reduced operational cost.
The system was engineered for compatibility and ease of use, requiring limited training while integrating seamlessly with a wide array of existing rocket components and fire-control systems. Its platform versatility spans helicopters, fighter jets, UAVs, ground vehicles, and naval systems, making APKWS a highly adaptable munition across air, land, and maritime missions. These features have helped expand its adoption among US partners and NATO allies.
In 2024, APKWS demonstrated new operational applications, including successful test launches from a multi-rotor drone and a specially modified F-15E Strike Eagle. BAE Systems is also studying its integration on the Eurofighter Typhoon, with a focus on counter-drone missions—an area of growing importance for European air forces. This latest contract ensures the continued evolution and availability of the world’s most widely used laser-guided rocket system.
