NAL Research Unveils Maritime Anti-GPS-Spoofing Tool With Norwegian Collaboration Virginia-based NAL Research has partnered with Norwegian companies Tschudi Shipping and SGM Technology to introduce “PntGuard,” an innovative maritime positioning system designed to protect vessels from navigation interference. The solution was unveiled as global shipping faces increased GPS spoofing incidents in congested and contested waters. PntGuard operates as a plug-and-play navigation integrity solution, instantly alerting crews when their GPS signal is compromised. It integrates two core components — a receiver connected to a Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) service, and a bridge-mounted display that visually differentiates between spoofed and authentic location data. The system aims to enhance maritime domain awareness, particularly for vessels operating in high-risk areas such as the Black Sea, Baltic, and Eastern Mediterranean, where electronic warfare and signal deception have escalated. NAL Research, known for its satellite communications technology for defense and government customers, brings its heritage in resilient PNT systems to the maritime environment. Tschudi Shipping contributes operational experience from Arctic and European maritime routes, while SGM Technology offers integration and system testing expertise. Together, the consortium seeks to create a commercially viable, security-grade navigational aid suitable for both civilian and defense applications, offering enhanced resilience in GPS-denied environments. As navies and shipping companies adapt to hybrid threats, PntGuard demonstrates how private-sector innovation is increasingly central to maritime situational awareness and navigation assurance.
