For the first time, Ireland is preparing to deploy a high-end radar system designed to detect a broad spectrum of airborne threats—including stealth technology and aircraft attempting to avoid standard surveillance. The radar’s unique capabilities extend to tracking planes that behave abnormally, such as those used by smugglers or involved in hijackings, which often switch off their transponders to escape notice.

Until now, Ireland has depended heavily on allied information to monitor its skies. The new radar will remedy this gap, providing stand-alone, persistent coverage across Irish-controlled airspace. This system is expected to serve as the foundation for early warning networks and real-time national air security response, supporting not just the military but also civil authorities.

By upgrading its air defense backbone, Ireland is poised to significantly enhance its ability to protect against both traditional and unconventional airborne incursions, firmly establishing autonomy in the vital domain of airspace monitoring.
