Lockheed Martin has handed over the Minimum Engagement Package (MEP) of the eighth Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to the U.S. government. This package comprises three launchers and a fire control unit, which will be integrated with the AN/TPY-2 radar system from Raytheon Technologies. The remaining equipment is set for delivery later this summer. This milestone greatly enhances the U.S. Army’s defensive capabilities, safeguarding valuable assets domestically and internationally against ballistic missile attacks.
Since 1987, Lockheed Martin has been the prime contractor for the THAAD system, significantly contributing to its development, manufacturing, and integration. The Army activated the first THAAD battery, A-4, in May 2008. The Missile Defense Agency awarded the contract for the eighth battery in 2022. This new battery will improve the military’s agility in responding to global threats, protect critical infrastructure and populations, and reinforce the U.S. missile defense architecture.
THAAD is a proven, state-of-the-art hit-to-kill missile defense system designed to intercept ballistic missiles both within and beyond the atmosphere. With unmatched accuracy, speed, and a perfect 100% flight test intercept success, THAAD delivers essential protection against short, medium, and intermediate-range missile threats. Its proven combat performance and ready-now status continue to attract widespread interest from defense communities worldwide.
