Vietnam is nearing the completion of a $700-million deal to buy BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India, set to equip both airborne platforms and land-based systems within its armed forces. This move, expected to formalize soon, will provide Vietnam’s military—especially its Su-30 fleet—with a credible standoff strike option against potential adversaries, marking a leap in Vietnam’s pursuit of advanced weaponry.

The contract follows months of defense dialogue and mirrors the progression seen with the Philippines’ previous acquisition of shore-based BrahMos batteries for $362 million. Vietnam’s acquisition will not only modernize its firepower but will also signal increased sophistication and interoperability among Southeast Asian militaries.

As the second Asian country to deploy the BrahMos, Vietnam underlines a strategic posture aimed at defending territorial interests and supporting regional security initiatives. The deal is a testament to strengthening ties with India and will likely encourage further cooperation in defense technology and training between the two countries.
