The UK has taken a major step to bolster its air defence capabilities, confirming the purchase of six Land Ceptor launchers under a £118 million contract awarded to MBDA. The Ministry of Defence stated that the acquisition not only addresses critical security needs but will also sustain around 140 jobs nationwide, reinforcing the link between defence investment and industrial growth.
With European security challenged by Russian military activity and the rising use of drones in modern warfare, the decision arrives at a strategically important time for both the British Armed Forces and NATO partners. Officials noted that the Land Ceptor will play a central role in defending against fast jets, drones, and cruise missiles.
Known as part of the Sky Sabre system, the Land Ceptor employs MBDA’s CAMM missile family. The standard version offers a range of 28 km, while the CAMM-ER extends reach to 45 km. Each interceptor is fitted with a 10 kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead, activated by a laser proximity fuze and steered by an active radar seeker for pinpoint accuracy.
The system incorporates the Saab Giraffe Agile Multi Beam radar, with a 120 km detection range, and a Rafael SAMOC control centre for real-time coordination. Capable of guiding up to 24 missiles simultaneously, Sky Sabre has shown it can hit extremely small, high-speed targets, underscoring its value as one of the most advanced air defence solutions currently deployed in Europe.
