Britain and Germany have launched a joint artillery evaluation program after signing a £52 million contract to procure and test the RCH 155 8×8 self-propelled howitzer. The initiative, known as the Early Capability Demonstrator, reflects both nations’ efforts to modernize land forces while expanding defense cooperation under the Trinity House agreement.

The program will see the UK field a single RCH 155 system and Germany operate two units, enabling combined testing and shared assessment of the platform’s performance. By pooling operational feedback and technical expertise, both militaries aim to reduce risk and accelerate decision-making on future artillery acquisitions.

The RCH 155 combines a combat-proven 155mm L52 gun with the Boxer wheeled armored vehicle, delivering a highly mobile artillery solution capable of precision strikes at extended ranges. The system’s automation and digital fire-control architecture allow it to conduct rapid fire missions, reposition quickly, and operate effectively in contested environments. For the British Army, the platform is being assessed as a potential cornerstone of its Mobile Fires Platform program.

Featuring a fully remote-controlled turret, automated ammunition handling, and a 30-round magazine, the RCH 155 supports multiple-round simultaneous impact firing for maximum battlefield effect. Its integration on the Boxer chassis also provides strategic and logistical advantages, aligning with the UK’s wider investment in Boxer vehicles and enhancing deployability across European and expeditionary operations.
