The US Navy has issued a $67.5 million contract award to Systems Planning and Analysis Inc. to provide continued technical and analytical support for the Trident II SLBM Strategic Weapons System, a cornerstone of both American and British nuclear deterrence and a key element of NATO’s defense posture.
Awarded by the Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs office, the cost-plus-fixed-fee task order is valued at $67,519,083 and will be executed by SPA from its headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. The scope of work includes support tied to Foreign Military Sales, directly contributing to the Royal Navy’s submarine-based nuclear force and strengthening transatlantic deterrence cooperation.
Under the agreement, SPA will perform systems engineering analysis, performance validation, enterprise data management, and strategic risk assessments associated with the Trident II D5 missile enterprise. These efforts ensure the continued operational reliability of the missile and the broader Strategic Weapons System, which encompasses launch control, navigation, fire-control, maintenance, and command-and-control subsystems required for rapid and precise undersea nuclear strike operations.
The Trident II D5, built by Lockheed Martin, is widely regarded as the most accurate and reliable SLBM ever fielded. With an advanced astro-inertial guidance system enhanced by stellar navigation updates, the missile delivers highly precise second-strike capability from submerged submarines. Deployed aboard US Ohio-class and UK Vanguard-class submarines, and slated for integration with the Columbia-class fleet, the system remains central to sustaining a credible, survivable nuclear deterrent well into the future.
