The Royal Thai Air Force has signed a 3.44-billion-baht ($107 million) contract with Israel Aerospace Industries to acquire the Barak MX air defense system, marking a major step in Thailand’s air defense overhaul. The system will play a central role in the service’s IADS modernization effort, focused on safeguarding key air bases and critical infrastructure.

Chosen for its versatility and advanced threat-neutralizing capabilities, the Barak MX addresses growing challenges posed by unmanned systems and long-range missile attacks. The platform includes interceptor options with operational ranges of 35 km, 70 km, and 150 km, creating a layered defense architecture. Once fielded, it will significantly enhance Thailand’s medium- and high-altitude interception capacity and improve overall network resilience.

The Barak MX has proven effectiveness in recent combat operations, including Israel’s June “Rising Lion” mission, where it intercepted Iranian missiles with high accuracy. This demonstrated performance was a major point of confidence for Thai defense planners seeking a reliable, modern solution.

This acquisition comes at a critical time, as neighboring countries have reportedly strengthened their strike capabilities. Cambodia operates China’s PHL-03 130-km rocket system, while Myanmar possesses North Korean Hwasong ballistic missiles with ranges between 300 and 700 km. The integration of the Barak MX is expected to significantly bolster Thailand’s defensive posture amid rising regional tensions.
