Sweden has expanded its ongoing missile procurement by revising its contract with MBDA to secure additional CAMM air-defense missiles. The original deal, signed in 2023, covered deliveries of the CAMM interceptor along with the Sea Ceptor shipborne defense system for five Visby-class corvettes operated by the Royal Swedish Navy.
The integration of Sea Ceptor into the Visby fleet is tied to a mid-term modernization program set to commence in late 2025. The upgrade initiative will be executed jointly by Saab and MBDA, with the first modernized corvette slated for delivery in late 2026. The effort underscores Sweden’s commitment to strengthening its naval air-defense posture as regional threats evolve.
CAMM, a central component of the Sea Ceptor architecture, uses a vertical launch system with a low-signature ignition profile, reducing the missile’s detectability during launch. The interceptor provides a 25-kilometer range, a 10-kilometer altitude ceiling, and full 360-degree coverage, allowing it to counter multiple simultaneous airborne targets.
Equipped with an active RF seeker, CAMM maintains high accuracy in all weather conditions and eliminates the need for specialized guidance radars, lowering overall system costs. Weighing just 99 kilograms, the missile is adaptable to a wide range of vessels—from compact patrol boats to larger warships—making it an efficient solution for modern naval air-defense requirements.
