BAE Systems Hägglunds has awarded Saab a contract to supply its UTAAS sighting and fire-control system for the CV90 combat vehicle family, strengthening the platform’s lethality and air-defense capability. The deal is valued at around SEK 314 million ($34 million), with system deliveries planned across 2029 and 2030.
The Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System is a proven solution already fielded by several CV90 operators, including Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, and the Netherlands. Additional European users such as Denmark, Estonia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia have also selected UTAAS for future CV90 deliveries or mid-life upgrade programs.
UTAAS enables accurate fire against a broad spectrum of targets, from armored ground threats to helicopters and low-flying aircraft. Its open and modular design allows integration with multiple weapon types, connection to command-and-control networks, and compatibility with smart ammunition programming systems, supporting evolving battlefield requirements.
The system’s design uses a common optical aperture, improving robustness and eliminating the need for optical realignment. An independently stabilized line of sight keeps the target centered as the laser rangefinder measures distance, while the fire-control computer automatically adjusts weapon aiming. The top-mounted sensor module offers wide freedom of movement, allowing effective tracking of fast-moving air targets at ranges up to 2 kilometers, while stabilized firing enables accurate engagements of ground targets at distances of up to 5 kilometers, even when the vehicle is in motion.
