The Romanian Ministry of Defense has awarded Raytheon a $168 million contract to acquire additional components for its Patriot air and missile defense systems, further expanding the country’s integrated air defense network. The purchase supports Romania’s broader strategy to modernize its military and reinforce NATO’s eastern flank.
The agreement covers a wide range of system elements, including radar units, command-and-control infrastructure, missile launchers, testing equipment, and logistical support services. This latest order follows an earlier Patriot contract finalized in April, making it Romania’s second major Patriot acquisition in 2025.
Romania has committed to the procurement of seven Patriot batteries, with deliveries spanning from 2020 through 2030. Four systems were delivered in 2023, one of which was subsequently donated to Ukraine as part of international military support efforts following Russia’s invasion.
Raytheon’s Patriot missile defense system is designed to counter aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missile threats, offering interception capabilities at altitudes up to 36,000 meters and ranges of 160 kilometers. Since entering service in the 1980s, the system has undergone multiple upgrades to address emerging threats and remains one of the world’s most widely deployed air defense platforms, currently in service with 19 nations. In 2025, Raytheon also secured new Patriot contracts with Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, highlighting continued global demand for the system.
