Prague has taken another step in modernizing its armed forces, approving the acquisition of 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from KNDS Deutschland. The core purchase is valued at 32.76 billion Czech koruna ($1.56 billion) and is tied to a defense framework agreement with Germany. Additionally, 1.49 billion koruna ($71 million) has been earmarked for vehicle customization to suit local operational needs.

The contract covers more than just the tanks themselves. It includes self-defense systems, mine protection, and full logistical support—ranging from spare parts and training to documentation and operational management. To ensure financial flexibility, an exchange rate reserve of 5 billion Czech koruna ($239 million) has been secured.

The agreement, which still requires cabinet approval, also leaves room for the future purchase of 14 more Leopard 2A8 tanks. This decision follows the Czech Republic’s earlier donation of all 86 of its T-72M1 tanks to Ukraine, underscoring its commitment to NATO defense efforts amid Russia’s aggression.

Beyond the initial order, Prague has outlined plans to add 19 more Leopard 2A8s in four specialized versions: engineering, recovery, bridge-laying, and driver training. If finalized, the country will eventually field between 61 and 77 tanks in six different configurations, greatly enhancing its ground combat readiness.
