Poland is set to expand its arsenal of advanced anti-tank systems following US approval of a potential $780-million Javelin missile deal. The proposed package includes 2,506 FGM-148F Javelins and 253 Lightweight Command Launch Units, alongside support equipment such as training systems, spares, and tools.

The deal is expected to significantly strengthen Poland’s territorial defense while aligning its armed forces more closely with NATO standards. The acquisition underscores Warsaw’s focus on bolstering anti-armor capabilities as part of its broader modernization efforts.

The Javelin system, widely regarded as one of the most effective man-portable guided weapons, is designed to defeat heavily armored vehicles. Equipped with an infrared guidance system, it allows operators to “fire and forget,” engaging targets from 65 meters to 4 kilometers. Its top-attack profile enables strikes on tanks at their weakest points, further enhancing effectiveness.

Included in the package is the newer Javelin Lightweight CLU, which offers a 30 percent size reduction and 25 percent weight savings compared to the Block I model. It doubles target detection and recognition capability, while ergonomic improvements make it more comfortable for soldiers to operate. These enhancements, paired with Poland’s growing inventory, ensure the Javelin will remain a cornerstone of its ground defense strategy.
