The ACC–Detroit Arsenal has awarded an $89 million contract for the production and installation of new Palletized Load System A2 (PLS A2) vehicles under the Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles V (FHTV V) program. The initiative reflects the Army’s effort to modernize its heavy transport fleet with autonomy-capable logistics vehicles designed for high-threat and complex operational environments. The contract runs through August 2029, ensuring the Army maintains a reliable supply chain for ammunition, fuel, and cargo across dispersed combat zones.
Within the FHTV framework, the PLS A2 joins other heavy logistics platforms such as the HEMTT A4, all built around shared components to simplify training and maintenance. This modular approach allows the Army to recapitalize older vehicles while integrating new builds, keeping fielded fleets operationally consistent and cost-efficient over time. The result is a logistics backbone that prioritizes sustainability over scale, focusing on availability rather than sheer numbers.
The PLS A2’s engineering advances reflect a clear shift toward automation and crew safety. It incorporates drive-by-wire controls for supervised autonomous operations, driver-assist technologies to mitigate collision and rollover risks, and a modular electronic architecture for easy technology upgrades. These design elements support the Army’s long-term logistics transformation, allowing it to adapt faster to evolving battlefield needs while maintaining the mobility and safety of its supply convoys.
