The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) has deployed two Bluebottle Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs), named Tahi and Rua, to Fiji as part of Operation Calypso, a regional mission focused on strengthening maritime security across the South Pacific. These autonomous systems were delivered by HMNZS Canterbury, the RNZN’s largest ship, to assist in monitoring Fiji’s exclusive economic zone and curbing activities such as illegal fishing and drug trafficking. The deployment highlights New Zealand’s commitment to collaborative security efforts in the region.
Serving as the mission’s operational base, HMNZS Canterbury brings multi-role capabilities with its large amphibious sealift design, including a flight deck, a well dock for small craft, and space for cargo and personnel. It functions as the central hub for coordination with the Fijian Navy, while aerial surveillance is handled by the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s No. 42 Squadron King Air aircraft. Monitoring of the USVs takes place at Suva’s Maritime Essential Services Centre, jointly manned by RNZN and Fijian personnel. After hours, control is handed over to HMNZS Matataua from Auckland’s Devonport Naval Base.
