The Hungarian Army has received its full complement of 44 Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks following the completion of deliveries by KNDS Deutschland. The milestone marks the successful execution of a 2018 defense procurement contract focused on modernizing Hungary’s armored warfare capabilities and replacing outdated Cold War-era platforms.
The contract extended beyond main battle tanks to include 24 PzH 2000 self-propelled artillery systems, three Leguan armored bridge layers, and five Wisent recovery vehicles. Hungary also received a dedicated simulation center, as well as training and long-term logistics support, ensuring full operational readiness of the new armored fleet. The systems are now fielded with the 1st Armored Brigade, forming the backbone of the country’s modern heavy forces.
Designed for high-intensity combat, the Leopard 2A7HU measures approximately 7.7 meters in hull length and reaches about 11 meters with its main gun aligned forward. The tank is powered by a Rheinmetall L55A1 120 mm gun capable of accurate engagements at distances up to 5 kilometers. Complementing the main armament are a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, a remotely operated 12.7 mm machine gun, and 76 mm smoke launchers, providing layered firepower and battlefield survivability.
