Italy has formally decided to improve its airspace protection capabilities by implementing Germany’s Skynex air defense system. One Skynex system, which will be used as a “pilot” platform for the Italian Army, has been ordered for 73 million euros ($75 million), according to manufacturer Rheinmetall.The system consists of four 35mm firing units, a command-and-control station, and a high-performance sensor and tracking unit for air surveillance. Ammunition, replacement parts, training assistance, and maintenance services are also included in the package.
