Tel Aviv has launched a $1.5 billion initiative to accelerate the production of armored platforms, including tanks and troop carriers, in response to the ongoing war in Gaza. Announced by Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior defense officials, the Armored Vehicle Acceleration Project is part of Israel’s broader drive to expand ground combat capabilities over the next five years.
The initiative calls for expanded production lines, upgraded maintenance facilities, and increased support for local defense contractors. Officials highlighted that the program not only enhances operational readiness but also reinforces Israel’s economic resilience by boosting regional manufacturing.
Among the systems prioritized are the latest Merkava battle tank with AI integration and enhanced firepower, the battle-proven Namer armored personnel carrier, and the Eitan wheeled fighting vehicle. These platforms have been crucial during the Swords of Iron War, Israel’s nearly two-year confrontation with Hamas, amassing more than one million kilometers in battlefield use since October 2023.
The Defense Ministry emphasized that the plan reflects Israel’s commitment to preserving technological independence and adapting to shifting security threats. Pending approval by the Joint Committee for the Defense Budget, the program will proceed with large-scale procurement contracts valued in the billions of shekels.
