Northrop Grumman and MBDA have agreed to work together to enhance Germany’s next-generation air and missile defense capabilities. The partnership, unveiled at the Berlin Security Conference, centers on integrating Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) with MBDA’s air defense solutions to create a more resilient and connected defense network.

The collaboration will include joint demonstrations and technology exchanges to validate interoperability between the two companies’ systems. This initiative supports Germany’s ambition to develop a highly networked air defense framework capable of rapidly responding to complex aerial threats.

Northrop Grumman’s IBCS serves as the backbone of the effort. The open-architecture system fuses multiple sensors and weapons into one operational picture, enabling coordinated engagements across dispersed units. Central to IBCS is the S-280 Shelter, a mobile unit that houses the Engagement Operations Center responsible for battle management and engagement planning.

The system is reinforced by the Integrated Collaborative Environment, providing the necessary equipment, workstations, and infrastructure for up to two dozen operators. Another key element is the Integrated Fire Control Network, an unmanned node that links sensors, launchers, and command hubs through radio, fiber, or satellite. Its plug-and-fight interface allows the rapid addition of new weapons and sensors, ensuring that high-quality targeting data moves seamlessly across the entire network to support precision engagements.
