The United States has approved a potential $1.23 billion foreign military sale to Germany for as many as 400 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. Alongside the missiles, the deal includes training, test equipment, logistics, and guidance packages, pending clearance by the US Congress.

The AIM-120D-3 is the most advanced variant in the AMRAAM series, offering extended strike range, improved targeting precision, and greater resilience against electronic warfare. These capabilities are expected to bolster Germany’s air power as the country transitions toward the F-35 fighter jet, which will serve as the backbone of its future air fleet.

The comprehensive package covers 12 M-Code GPS-enabled guidance sections, one integrated test vehicle, telemetry and encryption kits, spare parts, and contractor services. RTX Corporation of Arlington, Virginia, will act as the primary industry partner for the contract.

Washington has stated that the sale is consistent with US foreign policy and NATO defense objectives. For Berlin, the purchase reflects an accelerated military modernization drive spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Germany has raised defense spending to meet NATO’s 2 percent GDP target and is pursuing major acquisitions, including fifth-generation fighters and state-of-the-art air defense systems, to reinforce its deterrence posture.
