The Israeli Ministry of Defense has announced a $3.1 billion follow-on contract with Germany to expand the deployment of the Arrow-3 air defense missile system, reinforcing Germany’s rapidly evolving air and missile defense posture. The agreement reflects Berlin’s heightened focus on countering long-range ballistic missile threats and strengthening Europe-wide defensive coverage in response to an increasingly unstable security environment.
The contract builds upon the landmark Arrow-3 export agreement concluded in late 2023, which established Germany as the first international customer of Israel’s exo-atmospheric interceptor. Valued at approximately $4 billion, the original deal—approved by the U.S. government—covered system procurement, integration, and early deployment and marked a turning point in German defense planning. Israel confirmed that the first operational Arrow-3 system was delivered to Germany during a formal ceremony at a German Air Force base near Berlin, signaling tangible progress toward operational capability and integration into Germany’s national air defense network.
Under the newly signed agreement, Germany will receive additional Arrow-3 system elements, expanded coverage capacity, and long-term sustainment support, ensuring interceptor availability and enhanced command-and-control integration. Arrow-3 forms the highest defensive layer in Israel’s missile defense architecture, intercepting ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere through kinetic hit-to-kill engagement. Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries in close collaboration with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, the system enables early neutralization of threats before atmospheric reentry, significantly reducing collateral risk while strengthening Germany’s contribution to NATO and the European Sky Shield Initiative.
