The Bundeswehr has signed a new framework contract with Flensburg Technology Systems (FTS) to supply up to 200 Tahr-class light airborne vehicles, reinforcing the mobility and firepower of Germany’s special operations units. The framework agreement, valued initially at €30 million ($35 million), includes vehicle deliveries, specialized maintenance kits, and full operational documentation.
The first phase of the order covers 40 combat and 14 support variants, with deliveries planned through 2028. The seven-year deal enables the military to expand procurement as requirements increase, providing long-term flexibility for modernization of airborne forces. Funding for the initial batch has already been released, signaling the start of production.
Developed from the Z-family all-terrain platform by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)/ELTA, the 3.2-ton Tahr vehicles are engineered for extreme off-road performance and rapid deployment. The combat version seats three and can mount a range of weapons, including 12.7 mm heavy machine guns, MG6 miniguns, or automatic grenade launchers. Meanwhile, the support variant features a lighter two-seat configuration designed primarily for transport and resupply missions.
Flensburg Technology Systems, operating under FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft in partnership with IAI/ELTA, will manage production in Germany. The program highlights growing European-Israeli defense cooperation and underscores Berlin’s focus on equipping its elite forces with next-generation airborne tactical mobility platforms.
