At a formal handover at the Cecchignola military complex near Rome, the Italian Army received the first upgraded Ariete C2 main battle tank, produced by the Iveco-Oto Melara Consortium (CIO). This delivery is part of a major initiative to upgrade a total of 90 units under a program focused on enhancing the Italian Army’s armored warfare capabilities.

The Ariete C2 introduces significant enhancements over the original C1 variant. Its mobility is strengthened by a new 1,500-horsepower IVECO V-12 turbo diesel engine, delivering a 20% power increase. The tank’s suspension has also been redesigned, featuring seven road wheels and four return rollers per side, supported by torsion bar springs and hydraulic shock absorbers to optimize performance across difficult terrain.

Combat effectiveness has been improved through the integration of advanced fire control systems. A newly installed ballistic computer enables accurate firing on the move. The tank’s main gun, a 120mm smoothbore cannon, can fire all types of standard NATO rounds, ensuring flexibility in ammunition usage. Additional weaponry includes a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a 12.7mm machine gun mounted on the turret for anti-infantry and air defense operations.

The tank’s command and control capabilities are significantly modernized with Leonardo’s C2D/N EVO system, combined with a four-channel software-defined radio, satellite communications, and enhanced digital intercom systems, supporting interoperability in multi-domain operations.

To boost targeting efficiency, the Ariete C2 is equipped with thermal night sights, laser rangefinders, and high-resolution optics for both the commander and the gunner. This upgrade ensures 24/7 combat readiness and increased survivability on the battlefield.

This program is part of Italy’s broader armored modernization strategy and includes a decade-long logistics support package, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to maintaining cutting-edge land forces.
