The Indian Army has chosen BAE Systems Hägglunds’ BvS10 AATV as its new all-terrain tracked vehicle, becoming the first nation in Asia to adopt the platform. A total of 18 BvS10 “Sindhu” vehicles—all configured for troop transport—will be produced under a new agreement involving Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which will manage complete production at its Hazira Armoured Systems Complex.

The deal includes extensive technology and design transfer from BAE Systems, the original maker of the BvS10, ensuring Indian engineers gain full knowledge for integration and sustainment. The package also covers logistics support, maintenance tools, and lifecycle assistance, enabling reliable operational use from the outset. The first vehicles are expected to be delivered within two years of contract signing.

India’s Ministry of Defence initiated its AATV requirement in 2022, seeking mobility platforms capable of performing in high-altitude regions, marshlands, rugged mountain routes, and swampy terrain. In September 2023, BAE Systems and L&T jointly showcased the BvS10, competing against the indigenous Talwar ATV before ultimately winning the selection. The program will advance the Make in India initiative by incorporating over 60% indigenous components.

The BvS10 Sindhu has been tailored for Indian operations with a more powerful 350 hp engine and an upgraded turbocharger for enhanced performance. During evaluation trials, it operated smoothly at elevations above 18,000 feet, demonstrating reliability in extreme environments. Its articulated dual-body design provides superior off-road mobility across ice, rock, mud, steep gradients, and broken terrain, while its amphibious capability allows movement through flooded areas and shallow waters. The vehicle’s modular layout supports multiple mission configurations such as command post, ambulance, surveillance, and logistics transport.
