Germany has commissioned KNDS Deutschland to produce a fresh batch of 48 Boxer armored vehicles, reinforcing the Bundeswehr’s armored support and training capabilities. The new contract, valued at 352 million euros ($409 million), includes 38 highly protected ambulance variants and 10 driver training vehicles, with provisions to expand the order by up to 250 additional Boxers in the coming years.
These vehicles will begin rolling out to the German military from 2028 onward, forming a key part of a much larger 4.5-billion-euro ($5.25-billion) multinational procurement agreement covering 270 Boxer units for Germany and the Netherlands. The order reflects Europe’s push to standardize and expand its fleet of modern, survivable armored systems.
The program is being carried out under ARTEC, the joint venture between KNDS Deutschland and Rheinmetall Landsysteme that delivers all Boxer vehicles. KNDS, acting as ARTEC’s subcontractor, will manufacture the new platforms in line with the vehicle family’s well-established standards of protection, mobility, and medical support capability.
The Boxer ambulance variant functions as the first critical link in battlefield medical evacuation, providing a secure and adaptable space for pre-hospital care, casualty stabilization, and intensive treatment when necessary. The driver training variant, designed exclusively for peacetime instruction, replicates the handling characteristics and weight of operational Boxers, ensuring a seamless transition for drivers once deployed in real-world missions.
