The UK government has completed an early delivery of hundreds of Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs) to Ukraine, fulfilling part of a 1.6-billion-pound ($2.13 billion) weapons deal five months ahead of schedule. Manufactured by Thales in Belfast, the missiles are a critical component of Ukraine’s expanding air defense capability against Russian aerial threats.
Commonly known as Martlet, the LMM is a laser-guided missile capable of striking targets over 6 kilometers away at speeds reaching Mach 1.5. Its multi-platform compatibility allows launches from air, land, and sea systems, making it suitable for intercepting drones, light armored vehicles, and fast surface craft. Since its first deployment in 2022, the missile has played a key role in downing hundreds of Russian drones and cruise missiles across Ukrainian skies.
The missile production initiative is delivering significant industrial benefits to the UK’s defense sector, supporting more than 900 jobs nationwide — 200 new and 700 existing. British defense officials highlighted that the accelerated delivery schedule demonstrates the efficiency of UK manufacturing and its commitment to sustaining Ukraine’s air superiority.
In addition to the missile program, the UK and Ukraine are expanding joint research under the LYRA and Project OCTOPUS initiatives. These efforts aim to co-develop and mass-produce interceptor drones to counter the growing drone warfare threat. Once fully operational, Project OCTOPUS is expected to manufacture thousands of drone interceptors monthly, strengthening Ukraine’s defensive posture and contributing to the broader NATO-aligned defense ecosystem.
