Brazil is evaluating an offer from Germany to acquire 65 Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks and 78 Marder 1A5 infantry fighting vehicles, marking a major step in its New Family of Tracked Armored Vehicles program. The deal, reported by Tecnologia & Defesa, would provide Brazil with modern European armored systems as it seeks to renew its ground combat fleet.
The proposed vehicles originate from Germany’s defense stockpiles and would be refitted by KNDS before being handed over. The Leopard 2A6, one of Europe’s most respected tanks, comes equipped with a 120mm L55 cannon, advanced armor, and reinforced mine protection—attributes that deliver superior lethality and crew safety. This model has evolved from Germany’s second-generation Leopard 2s, which were upgraded through multiple iterations, including A6M and A7 versions.
Germany retains roughly 68 Leopard 2A6 tanks, with the units offered to Brazil reportedly among those not transferred to Ukraine. In parallel, the Marder 1A5 IFV would enhance Brazil’s mechanized infantry capabilities, providing greater firepower and mobility compared to older tracked vehicles currently in service.
The modernization plan aims to replace obsolete platforms with interoperable, high-performance systems while stimulating local defense manufacturing. Brazil’s industry is expected to play a key role by contributing components and technical support. This aligns with broader efforts that include upgraded Leopard 1A5BR tanks, the Centauro II 8×8 program, and expanded training and maintenance infrastructure—all part of Brazil’s drive to strengthen its armored warfare readiness.
