Germany has awarded a 3-billion-euro ($3.48-billion) contract to General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) to produce a new generation of reconnaissance vehicles for its army. Under the agreement, GDELS will deliver 274 Luchs 2 armored reconnaissance vehicles between 2029 and 2032, replacing the long-serving Fennek 4×4 models currently in service.
The Luchs 2 will be developed on the Piranha 6×6 wheeled platform, providing enhanced mobility, amphibious capability, and superior battlefield resilience. The vehicle will incorporate advanced reconnaissance sensors, digital connectivity, and reduced acoustic and thermal signatures, enabling high survivability in modern operational environments. Its total weight of 25 tons and payload of 7.5 tons make it suitable for a variety of surveillance and support missions.
The comprehensive program also includes training simulators, spare parts, and logistical support, with an additional option to acquire 82 more vehicles. Supporting contracts will involve key European defense firms: Rheinmetall is expected to supply 310 25mm KBA automatic cannons, while Hensoldt Optronics will deliver electro-optical sensors, e.sigma will provide training solutions, and Saab Bofors Dynamics Switzerland will furnish camouflage systems.
The 25mm KBA cannon is designed for medium-range fire support with an effective range of 2,700 meters and a rate of fire of up to 600 rounds per minute, ensuring the Luchs 2 can engage diverse threats on the battlefield. The project underscores Germany’s commitment to strengthening its reconnaissance and armored vehicle capabilities in response to evolving European defense needs.
