In a landmark defense collaboration, Australia’s NIOA has signed an MoU with European defense giant MBDA to begin local production of the Mistral air defense missile. The partnership could establish Australia as a key manufacturing hub for very short-range air defense (VSHORAD) systems, significantly strengthening the country’s industrial defense base.

Under the agreement, both firms will explore assembly and production options in Australia, including locally developed warheads and integration into MBDA’s global Mistral supply network. Should the project advance, Australia will become the first non-French nation to manufacture the Mistral missile—a notable step toward defense self-reliance and international defense collaboration.

The initiative supports the Australian government’s Defence Industry Development Strategy, which promotes local defense manufacturing and global partnerships with allied nations. For MBDA, this deal will help expand production output, which has already increased to 40 Mistral missiles per month amid rising global demand and accelerated delivery schedules.

The Mistral 3, the latest iteration of the system, has showcased impressive capabilities in trials—intercepting low-observable drones and small surface vessels with high accuracy. With a range of 8,000 meters and an altitude ceiling of 6,000 meters, the supersonic missile delivers unmatched agility and resistance to infrared countermeasures. The Mistral’s growing adoption, including a €626 million Romanian order for 300 systems, highlights its rising prominence in modern air defense arsenals across Europe and beyond.
