The US Army is undergoing a sweeping transformation to confront growing air and missile challenges from global powers like China and Russia. Their rapid advancements in space and precision strike capabilities have prompted a strategic pivot toward integrated deterrence.

According to Lt. Gen. Sean Gainey, commander of the Space and Missile Defense Command, the modernization plan will introduce AI-enabled technologies, bolster counter-space measures, and enhance integration across air, missile, and space defense networks.

The Army is increasing its operational reach by fielding new Patriot battalions with advanced radars, along with Indirect Fire Protection and Counter-UAS batteries. These efforts aim to create a multi-layered defense informed by recent combat experiences in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Additionally, October will see the launch of the 40D Space Operations specialty for enlisted personnel — a first for the service — to embed space capabilities in training and operations. This modernization supports the Army’s 2040 strategy, which envisions modular formations, AI-supported decision-making, and integrated offensive and defensive launch systems to deliver a “leaner, faster, and more lethal” force.
